Instant Pianist : Piano+

A few posts ago, I’ve talked about a musical game called Violinist : Magical Bow which was developed by rubycell. Today I’m gonna talk about similar game, also from rubycell, but with different musical instrument called Piano+. Piano plus, of course, is a game of piano simulator but there’s a special feature inside that I really love.

I don’t know a lot about piano, aside from Do to Do, but I’m impressed how rubycell developed this game. The concept is actually similar to the violin one but the game mechanics is a little bit different. First of all, you’ll be presented with piano UI, obviously. This piano range is a little bit high to match the real piano, so you can hit the lowest note to the highest note. Now, this is a great idea, however our phone/tab screen might not be able to handle all that notes at once. You can, but the keys would be as small as strings thus hard to hit.

The game itself is similar to any hit-the-beat musical games. You’ll be presented the piano keys and have coming notes you need to hit with corresponding keys to produce sounds. It’s fun to play even though you can’t play piano at all. Sometimes you’re gonna mishit the notes and produce wrong sounds and make your supposed-to-be streak ends ridiculously. Sometimes in Piano+, you’ll need to press 2 or 3 keys simultaneously to fit the coming notes.

Moving to the song choices, you can browse online songs and might find what you really want. I’ve been playing some of my favorite songs including game and anime soundtracks. I think, the mechanism behind that online song search is some people out there making MIDI music sheets that can be played via this app. I don’t really know how they submit their works, but somehow, you can access that sheets by searching it from in-game search engine. Every songs you’ve searched would be stored on a list, so if in any case you want to replay it, don’t worry because everything’s stored.

On the other hand, I found some drawbacks from Piano+. This might relate to some people or it’s just my personal problem actually. Sometimes when I’m still in the middle of a song, the nodes just become invisible, I slide left and right to find them but no results. Then I press random key and suddenly all the nodes become visible again but in smaller size, breaking all the tempo. Sometimes the length of a node doesn’t suit the song at all. So when you’re holding a key of a node, then press another key that’s supposed to be your next node, you’ll move right away to that node, breaking the tempo as well. I think that’s an error and a homework for the developer for future enhancement. Other than that, I find this game amusing and pretty amazing, remembering how the music sheets are well-made and detailed.

Tale of the Underrated Pupil : Owlboy

For today, I’ll jump to another platform to talk about another game. Couple months ago I saw this game and I decided to try it. I’m quite a fan of retro-style gaming designed with 8-bit graphic style, so without further thinking, I jumped into this game.

That game was called Owlboy, and was developed by D-Pad Studio.  Owlboy is a side-scrolling 2D platformer game with an interesting plot and settings. You’ll gain control of a mute pupil owl, just an ordinary student which is always underrated by his classmates, called Otus. Being the fact that he’s a mute owl boy, he’s living with burden of being underestimated of his own and true capabilities. He lives in a airborne village and has a best friend who’s a local engineer/inventor named Geddy. Despite of being a non-confrontational manner, Geddy will always be ready to back Otus up whenever he’s in danger.

The journey of this couple in Owlboy starts when a group of sky pirate attacks and raids the village and the two are bound to seek revenge. Moving through the plot, you’ll gain some allies to aid you in help, as well as accessing some spaces with their special abilities. If you’re trying to complete the side stories, you’ll even go deeper with the original story of that village, or the world. You’re gonna explore the history and background of what’s left today. I recommend everyone to play this game. Cool as heck!

Since Owlboy is basically a 2D side-scrolling game, the movements are limited. You’ll only be able to move forward, backward, up, and down. However, this game combines flight system with the ordinary side-scrolling concept, thus you can go airborne and reach or explore even broader area. Owlboy‘s map is actually gigantic, therefore I can consider this game to be an open world 2D platformer. This is terrific since there’re not many games with similar concepts.

The game also provides you some puzzles to solve and sometimes they’re to reach secret area and pursue deeper stories. Some puzzles need certain and specific way to solve, including using your allies’ special abilities, thus not every puzzles can be solved before reaching some points in the story and recruit new crews. I think the only drawback is the game is too short :D. D-Pad studio, please make similar game but with waaay longer playtime :D.

Owlboy is a great game, everything is so balanced. The puzzles aren’t that hard to solve, the story line is deep and interesting, graphic style is really nostalgic (it brings me to my time when I was playing Nintendo, even Owlboy‘s graphic is more complex pixelated style). It’s unconsciously making me to go deeper and deeper by completing all the side story, but sadly I can’t get the last item from the village item shop because it needs every single coins in the game to buy. I need more game like this, simple but immersive. Heartwarming Game with Relaxing Music : Showa Candy Shop

Back on the time when I got this game, I barely know what new game should I explored. Despite being a hardcore game, I also love casual and light games only to fill up my spare time. Then I found this developer, Gagex Co.,Ltd. which has several casual games and I checked out 2 of them.

The first game I played is this candy-shop-themed game named Showa Candy Shop. There are 2 installments of this series already but I only played the 2nd installment. Since both the 1st and 2nd have similar gameplay (yes, I already installed 2 of them), I decided to keep the 2nd only and finish it thoroughly.

This game is a real gem, really. Showa Candy Shop 2 offers a simple and cool casual gaming experience with amazing game design. You’ll take a role of an old lady owning and managing a small candy shop (also sells toys) during Japan’s Showa era. You have one main mission to complete the game which is getting mails to complete the story of her families who are going out of the city. I won’t spoil anything here, just play the game by yourself and feel the great nuance.

 

As you can see, the graphic style is more into cute chibi-cartoon style with bright and soft tones of colors. I’m pretty sure this style of coloring doesn’t make your eyes tired quickly so you can play this game for quite a long time in one run. The nuance is very powerful in this game with that distant crowd noise, food sellers sound, chit chat, and many more.

The gameplay is pretty simple, yet making it not boring at all. First thing first is, you need to supply your shop with stuffs to attract children to come and buy something. They will give money to keep you with resupplying things. Some children have their own preferences in stuffs, so make sure to check the requirement in catalog in order to attract some specific children to come. Some children will leave mementos for collection and at some certain points in the game, specially after idle state (it’s an idle game, so it’s OK to leave for a while, just make sure it’s fully supplied before you leave), you’re gonna get letters which is the progress of the main storyline. Your other side mission is to collect every mementos, customers, and gachapon (capsule toys/goodies). Well, I finally got them 100%. It took some time but it’s worth it :D. The capsule toys were the ones that took quite a while to collect.

There’re 2 screen which is the front side of the shop and the inner part of the home. There’s a button on the upper left side that if you tap it, it will move you to the other screen. Customers will visit both part of the house, so make sure to check both of them frequently. Usually the letters and mementos are left on the 2nd screen (inner home).

The nuance is so calming with that cute graphics like I stated earlier, plus the soft and heartwarming music. That is so cool! You can even use the music for sleep therapy if you would, hahaha. Showa Candy Shop is a great game, suitable for casual gamers who’re not seeking any thrills, score, or hardcore challenges. If you’re in that criteria, this is your game! Besides, it’s free to download. :D. Need Massive Brain Exercise? : Puzzlerama

One of my favorite game genre of all time is puzzle. While puzzle has a lot of types, some of my preferred types are like hidden objectescape room, and some small scale puzzle. Lately, I found this game called Puzzlerama developed by Leo De Sol Games which turned out to be a mesmerizing puzzle game package and I’m still playing it up to this day during spare time.

While Puzzlerama could be downloaded for free and in full version (puzzle lovers would really love this), Leo De Sol Games offers 8 different puzzles with around 300 levels per each puzzle starting from the very simple one in the first Easy level to the most difficult one in the last of Expert level. Let’s take a look about this game’s appearance first before diving through the real features and contents..

Here, you’ll have

  • Flow, connecting dots throughout the entire board, shouldn’t leave any blank spot of board unfillled
  • Blocks, arranging scrambled puzzle-piece blocks to fit in the board
  • Pipes, rotating pieces of pipes to create continuous line of pipes, higher level will have several colors to match the water resource and the destination, some need color-combining as well (pretty neat, huh?)
  • Bridges, one of my fave of all items, connecting each dots with a number on each dots and have to connect it with exact amount of ‘bridge(s)’ corresponding to the stated number per dots.
  • Shikaku, making shape per colors and each color has to be exactly in the amount of corresponding number, this one is a tricky puzzle
  • Unroll, swiping puzzle, need to arrange a certain path for the ball to travel from the green block to red block uninterrupted.
  • Unblock, just free the blue block by clearing a path for it to break free, doing this by swiping several brown blocks around it so it can clear the path
  • Tangram, another favorite of mine, arranging cut-to-pieces puzzle parts to fit in the entire block, the cuts are provided with weird angles sometimes

I don’t think I have any objections for this game. The fact that it provides me with different kind of puzzles in ton of stages are very satisfying. Another reason why I love this game is that Puzzlerama doesn’t come with scoring system and time rush, making it more enjoyable. You don’t need to think about getting low score or running out of time. Just take your time and solve the puzzle. It’s a magnificent work of puzzle game design. Plus, it’s like a workout regime for your brain to keep it sharp.

Actually I don’t mind reviewing higher-end games like for PC or handheld console, but I just don’t have the resources, hahahahaha. So I’ll stay at mobile game for a while instead, at least until I upgrade my resources. Cyborg Parkour : Vector 2

Since I got my new phone around September 2016, I started to explore some new games that my old phone can’t handle. I stumbled across this parkour game called Vector. This game was developed by NEKKI. I only played Vector 2, the 2nd installment of the series. It’s a free-to-download game with some in-game purchase, including ads removal 😀

This game takes place in a futuristic world with a main theme of parkour or free running. You’ll gain control of a silhouette of cyborg man that is addressed as ‘test subject’. You’re gonna run free from that laboratory / factory that has strapped you in as a experiment subject. To do so, you have to run like there’s no tomorrow. Sets of obstacle will slow you down, or even worse, kill you on spot.

The great point is, you’re not just evading lasers, land mines, booby traps like ordinary person. You’re gonna do it gracefully and with style as doing moonsault, backflip, frontflip, vault, is like your daily activity. To do the jump, simply swipe upward anywhere in the screen. If your timing is perfect, you can do some insane tricks and perfectly evade the obstacles. Meanwhile, if your timing isn’t great, you’ll most likely hit obstacles, fail to vault gracefully since you’re going to stumble anything along your way. In fact, this game is mostly about timing. A blue/yellow trick card is used to do a trick which is corresponding to the shown card, so some cards will do different styles.

As you progress throughout this Vector 2 game, you will find yourself getting more equipment and armor including helmet, gloves, shoes, and body armor. Each armor has different energy and will be reduced when you collide with specific obstacles. For example, shoes’ energy will be reduced after you step on land mines, body armor’s will be reduced after you hit red lasers, and etc etc. So make sure to calculate every armor’s energy and if you have to hit something (in case there’s no safe way to travel unharmed) make sure to hit obstacle that will reduce one of your armor with the highest energy left.

At some points in your journey to freedom, you’ll find yourself in an intersection, with each ways have its obstacles/trick cards/locked doors which can only be opened with special key cards you obtain beforehand during your free run. A drawback in this game is you don’t always find key cards to open locked doors which lead you to forced deaths since some intersections have obstacles you can’t evade. But if your character dies there and start fresh, you can apply some additional skill upgrades for your armors (including increasing chance of finding key cards!), like this..

It’s not an endless running game even in a glance it looks like so. It has a final destination even at the time I was playing this game (about floor 25th or 26th) is still under development and I haven’t tried again since. Being a parkour game, you will be pleased with outstanding and magnificent real free running tricks while evading obstacles. I gotta give 2 thumbs up for that mesmerizing view, watching the gloriousness of free running in smooth side-scrolling graphic.

I just love this game that after I knew the next stage is still under development, my reaction was ‘WHAT!? NO WAY!”. It’s a cool game with great engine and gameplay and make sure to stay focus with the timing to beat Vector 2 to the very end. Retro Endless Quest : Punch Quest

OK, before I start to talk about this game, I try to take another topic for my blog while I’m gathering another material supplies for foodie trip. One night my friend said to me ‘Why don’t you make some reviews for games?’. Well, I think that’s a brilliant idea and I didn’t think about that before. While my supplies on foodie trip might be limited for now, but my arsenal on video games could be slightly less than a ton :D.

The fact is I’m an avid gamer since I was young. Back at that time I started with Nintendo console, about in 1996 or something. Then I move on to some consoles like PS, PS2, then PC, last is mobile. Since I have no more new consoles to play, I play more from my mobile phone.

In this series, I won’t talk about well known games like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Gears of Wars, or anything like those. Those games are famous on its own already. Meanwhile, I’ll give touch to indie games from some not-so-giant game developers. They didn’t request/ask me to review their games, this series will only depend on my own opinion and experiences.

So, I begin…… 😀

The first game for this series is called Punch Quest by Noodlecake Studios Inc.. It’s free to download from Google Play but have in-game purchase in case you want/need to do so. Its main story is about a hero/heroine that storms into a catacomb full of demons, monsters, and other evil beings and defeat them continuously using his/her fists. You start as a beginner character only capable of straight-jabbing and uppercutting. While you progress through the game, you can buy some higher skills on offense and defense. It’s an endless running game, so if you’re a quickly-get- bored person like me, you won’t find it too long to play this game (apply to any endless running games no matter how cool they are). The graphic style reminds me of some retro games I played when I grew up, especially with that 8-bit pixelated style.

The control is pretty simple. Tap on right screen for jab, to kill the enemies on the ground (some enemies need multiple punches to defeat), and tap on left screen to jump. You can do double jumps by tapping the left screen twice to reach higher altitude. Jumping is needed to defeat airborne enemies. By tapping left and right quickly, you can do uppercut punch that will get higher as soon as you get the upgrades. You’re gonna face some bosses at some points in the journey, so be prepared. To get to a far distance and reach high score, you need only to focus with your eye-finger coordination.

Health is displayed on the upper left corner of the screen and when you’re out of it, you know, dead and restarting the game again but you gain some money to buy upgrades. You’re going to start fresh and stronger for the next game. Losing health by colliding with enemies and each collision cost half a heart, so be careful. One downside is, some airborne enemies are carrying fire with their feet and if you uppercut them, losing health it is. In some cases you have to evade a ground enemies only to find yourself collide with that fire, so half a heart lost by ‘forced’. Another is, it’s pretty hard to collect money to buy upgrades, IMO. You’ll need about +- 6 to 7 runs to buy a basic upgrade and it’s getting more expensive for each upgrade. But, having such simple game with simple control and ability to make the players immersed are a great thing. It’s really fun to play during spare time. It has room for improvements but overall it’s really cool and nostalgic.
