Instant Pianist : Piano+

A few posts ago, I’ve talked about a musical game called Violinist : Magical Bow which was developed by rubycell. Today I’m gonna talk about similar game, also from rubycell, but with different musical instrument called Piano+. Piano plus, of course, is a game of piano simulator but there’s a special feature inside that I really love.

I don’t know a lot about piano, aside from Do to Do, but I’m impressed how rubycell developed this game. The concept is actually similar to the violin one but the game mechanics is a little bit different. First of all, you’ll be presented with piano UI, obviously. This piano range is a little bit high to match the real piano, so you can hit the lowest note to the highest note. Now, this is a great idea, however our phone/tab screen might not be able to handle all that notes at once. You can, but the keys would be as small as strings thus hard to hit.

The game itself is similar to any hit-the-beat musical games. You’ll be presented the piano keys and have coming notes you need to hit with corresponding keys to produce sounds. It’s fun to play even though you can’t play piano at all. Sometimes you’re gonna mishit the notes and produce wrong sounds and make your supposed-to-be streak ends ridiculously. Sometimes in Piano+, you’ll need to press 2 or 3 keys simultaneously to fit the coming notes.

Moving to the song choices, you can browse online songs and might find what you really want. I’ve been playing some of my favorite songs including game and anime soundtracks. I think, the mechanism behind that online song search is some people out there making MIDI music sheets that can be played via this app. I don’t really know how they submit their works, but somehow, you can access that sheets by searching it from in-game search engine. Every songs you’ve searched would be stored on a list, so if in any case you want to replay it, don’t worry because everything’s stored.

On the other hand, I found some drawbacks from Piano+. This might relate to some people or it’s just my personal problem actually. Sometimes when I’m still in the middle of a song, the nodes just become invisible, I slide left and right to find them but no results. Then I press random key and suddenly all the nodes become visible again but in smaller size, breaking all the tempo. Sometimes the length of a node doesn’t suit the song at all. So when you’re holding a key of a node, then press another key that’s supposed to be your next node, you’ll move right away to that node, breaking the tempo as well. I think that’s an error and a homework for the developer for future enhancement. Other than that, I find this game amusing and pretty amazing, remembering how the music sheets are well-made and detailed.

Instant Violinist : Violin Magical Bow

For the history of my life, I rarely played musical game, not even the famous Dance Dance Revolution during 90’s and early 2000’s. However, lately a lot of musical game, specially for mobile are really well-developed. Since it’s designed in 2010’s and onwards, they (developers) are using more futuristic musics, usually marked with techno style. I’m not really a techno guy, so I move to something else. My friend played a piano one before, might be reviewed next time. But for today, I wanna highlight the violin one called Violin : Magical Bow by rubycell. This developers also produced the piano one I’ve stated previously.

Since this is really a simple but magnificent game, I think I don’t need a long story to extract all the greatness, so here it is. Playing Violin : Magical Bow is like being an instant virtual violinist due to its amazing concept. First, we’ll talk about its music playlist. So far, every songs that I’ve ever played in the game is a classical notes. Take names of legendary maestro and composers like Bach, Brams, and many more at your song lists. You can play that with your virtual violin (or cello and viola if you buy the in-game purchase). Those masterpieces are right in your hand to play. But, not every musics are unlocked at the same time. You need to play some songs, make progress, gain experience, and level up to unlock next songs. The higher your level, the more songs in your book.

Now, for the game mechanics. All you’re presented with is just a violin with moving colorful nodes. All you have to do is play that node. Don’t worry it’s not that hard (in the beginning). Since there are 4 strings, there are 4 different areas for corresponding string. When a node reach the black circle point, you need to place your bow at the corresponding string area and start swiping left or right to make the sound by hitting that node. You go like this until the song is finished. Each nodes give you points for scoring system at the end of each song. Sometimes the nodes are a bit longer so you need to swipe slowly like dealing with the real violin. Timing and tempo are important in Violin : Magical Bow. Also sometimes, you’ll meet machine gun-like strings of nodes, so you need to play your bow carefully to get full points.

TBH, I don’t play the cello and viola version since I don’t have the budget to do so, but the violin itself is so dam* great. I don’t know much of classical instruments or compositions, but I like hearing some classical songs. I enjoy the song and the gameplay. The viola and cello have different game mechanics, I think, and I’m eager to try them sometimes in the future.

Unique and Nostalgic : Barcode Knight

Discovering unique game in the market is quite difficult, especially looking for one with great quality. Some games come with pretty basic game mechanics which isn’t that amusing or interesting. Some comes with short in-game story so the players couldn’t enjoy the game for a long time even though it has great potential to be people’s choice. So, it’s not often for me to find games that fit my preference (and probably others’ as well) at all specifications.

At one point, I found this game called Barcode Knight developed by Magic Cube. FYI, at this point, I’m not really able to distinguish between indie or giant developers, but I’ll just go with it. So, at the beginning of this games review I said that I’m gonna review some indie developers’ products, but I might do giant devs as well without me knowing it :D. Back to the game, Barcode Knight is a nostalgic game from me that reminds me of some old video games I’ve ever played before.

This game is basically RPG, a quite complex mechanics. You can forge weapons or armors by combining items. Actually what you can do is upgrading it by waiting certain amount of time to finish. However, you can only combine item of the same type, so it’s kinda need quite amount of grinding or so. By upgrading you’ll gain more strength or movement speed, which I’ll tell you later about movement speed for battle.

Another great thing is the avatar system. By changing your equip, your character will also change attire, or simply changing avatar. This makes Barcode Knight to be more interesting game especially for players who love more personified customization (e.g. : having different avatar/able to change hair color/changing name/etc). I’m that kind of player. People say that most male gamers don’t really think about customization seriously but I, on the other hand, love customization. For me, that feature makes that game more immersive (as I learned in game design lesson). So it doesn’t matter whether you’re male/female, I think personal customization is quite an essential element for a game.

Next is the battle. Barcode Knight has a unique concept for the players. In order to find enemies, players need to scan bar codes. Any bar codes work, whether you take it from a bottle of shampoo, or books, or anything, it leads to a in-game battle. Each bar code will result in different combination of enemies (the types, or levels, or statistics). But, if you’re too lazy to scan some, you can use the auto find feature. The scanning system is useful when you need specific enemies to take on, usually for completing daily missions. Daily missions will tell you to hunt certain enemies and will reward you with some stuffs.

Moving to the battle mechanics, this reminds me of some old games from Gameboy Advance and PS1, names like Tales of Phantasia or Tales of Destiny. Barcode Knight‘s battle system is 2D side scrolling auto battle. It’s turn-based and each attack is timed with certain amount of time. The higher your movement speed, the shorter the delay per attack, so that’s the important of upgrading your movement speed. There’s a special move that can be unleashed but you have to wait for it to fully filled. All attacks are automatically executed but the special moves. You can also get some battle aid by recruiting an extra member at the pub.

Barcode Knight is offered in 2 versions in Google Play, free and paid one. I tried the free one and this one contains ads. The ads aren’t spamming like a machine gun barrage, though, so if you want a sneak peek, you can get this version. But if you want the one without ads, you can buy the paid version as well as support the developer. Paid version also let you accelerate battles by tapping the 2x or 3x buttons during battle. I think this would be better the developer adds some online features like online PVP or something 😀

Restaurant Management Game : HuntCook

Ok, today I’m kinda busy with cleaning house, so I think I’m gonna make this quicker to pull of. Anyway, thank you for reading and giving life to this blog so at least, I’m gonna keep writing.

Few weeks ago my friend told me that he was downloading an offline game that might be interesting. The game logo was pretty cute that I wanted to try as well. This game ranked high in Google Play, at 4.6 with mostly positive reviews from the players. It’s called Hunt Cook, which was developed by Select Button Inc.. The game is free to download but contains in-game purchases even it’s not mandatory. It’s usually for players who’s willing to spend more money to excel quicker than normal.

I’m not gonna lie, the graphic style is so damn cute. Even a boar looks so adorable :D. They use cute chibi style for this game. Hunt Cook is basically a spare-time game since you need to wait the progress to finish to complete more objectives. You’ll fill the shoe of an apprentice working for a dog boss (yeah, you don’t read that wrong, your boss is a dog) to manage a restaurant. You’ll get customers and cook what they order. These orders are for you to level up and unlock more features as well as more animals to hunt.

Hunting, your raw ingredients can mainly be found by hunting since you’re cooking meat for customers. During hunting, you’ll take part of a mini game to catch your preys. Each prey can be caught with specific weapon and you need to buy them at the shop. Sometimes, when you go hunting, you’ll find an old man giving free stuffs or a spy-like man giving rare recipe which can be used to cook special dishes, but the later is really a matter of luck. As you progress throughout the game, your boss will be able to quick-gather kitchen supplies which is really helpful. You’ll gain a feature of trapping animals for raw meat as well.

As I said before, Hunt Cook is an idle game, which means you’ll spare more time off-game than on-game. Some food really takes time to finish which is better to leave and come back few moments later. Probably at the beginning, you can stay in game for a while. You can also add some friends, real friends, to aid you by giving free ingredients. You give them, they give you as well. Last but not least, this game might be a perfect choice for casual gamer which don’t really have much spare time.

Psychological Pixel Horror : Distraint

A game with deep story is my favorite and this type includes Distraint which was developed by Jesse Makkonen. This game was originally launched for PC but later came the android version. This game was designed with pixelated graphic and in 2D side-scrolling movement. I don’t usually play horror game, but this game was rated almost perfectly at 4.9 in Google Play, so I decided to give it a run.. and I don’t regret it up to this point.

I think my pictures above have described Distraint fully with only 3 sentences, but I won’t stop here. I’m gonna share my experiences and what I feel throughout this game since the game mechanics are really superb.

First of all, as one of the picture described, the graphic HUD or UI is really simple. You have 5 barely-visible buttons at the bottom of your screen, left and right for movement, A for action, O for option, and B for I-forget-what since I played this game a few months ago. Find out by playing the game, I recommend it. 😀

In Distraint, you’ll gain control of a young ambitious man named Price, in doing his daily job, some kind of debt collector or so. He’s so ambitious and target-oriented that somehow he forgot some life values that he should adore more than money and position. This game brought up that story with unique plot and amazing detail, as well as some horror ‘spices’ for a full-meal game. The universe may start in a usual city and environment but as you progress throughout the game, you’ll face more weirdos, creeps, and other unexplainable stuffs and events. At the end, you’ll find out what really happen with Price’s life as well as a surprisingly shocking ending.

Distraint is mainly a side-scrolling puzzle game so you’ll need more brain than brawl to complete it. It’s not a few times that you’ll face a complex problem that let you explore the same area for a few times only to get a single clue. I admit that this puzzle’s level (overall) is amazing. It’s not that easy to solve but not not very hard as well. Balanced. You just need to be thorough in exploring areas or objects. The horror portion isn’t that much actually since it’s more about the story, but several  light-jumpscares do exists in this game. Don’t worry, that won’t give too much shock 😀

After all, this game gave me really great experience in playing light-horror game. I love the story, the ending, and the moral lessons they packed this game with. Since I’m still tied with limitation, especially with gaming platform, I’ll still cover mobile games and I need to explore even deeper in Google Play. Mixed Genres Game : Reaper

First thing first, actually I played this game about couple years ago, so I’m not recently updated if there’re new things on this game. Another thing is, since yesterday I was sick and I can barely think about content, and today is, in fact I still haven’t regained the consciousness balance in my mind. So, forgive me if some words are messed up or doesn’t even make sense, hahah..

OK, let’s talk about the game. So originally, my friend told me about this game called Reaper which was developed by Hexage. Back then, it’s a paid game. Not really, actually. You can download this game for free on Google Play but you don’t get full feature with it. There are some stuffs you can buy inside the game including the full story and/or some item sets. So, yeah if you want to have a taste on the game, you might want to try the free version first, then if you want the full version (which I’m pretty sure most of you do), support the developer by buying the in-game purchase.

Reaper is generally a mixed-genres game. It consists of 2D side-scrolling (which is so obvious) + hack and slash + RPG (espesially on character development). This game’s concept was pretty unique since that was the first time I played such game with this gameplay. I’m talking about its technical feature including controls and game mechanics.

Being a hack and slash game, you actually don’t need to tap-slam any button/screen since the game will do it automatically for you. All you need is approach enemies and the Reaper (main character) is going to attack them automatically. That’s called auto-attacks. Auto attacks resulting in gaining those skull marks at the top part of screen. That skull marks are used to unleashed strong skills like slamming down your sword for ground attack or upper-swing to attack airborne enemies. Those kind of skills are called manual attacks. You actually can unleash manual attack without having any skull marks but that will do weak damage.

For the character developments, it’s similar to RPG games since you can customize your own set of equipment including sword, helmet, gloves, belt, and some others. These gears could be bought at item shops using golds that you gain from destroying objects or defeating enemies. Another thing is, you can customize your character’s attributes. After a level up, you can gain access to attribute enhancement by picking a tarot card per level. You can adjust this advancement with your playing style or preference. For me, it’s always power first since it’s better to defeat enemies faster :D.

Giving players responsibilities of enhancing their own hero is one secret in making immersive games, especially when it comes to simple side scrolling games since it doesn’t have a lot of feature to bear. Thus, Reaper could be a really great example in creating game mechanics. Players can adjust their own hero to create something matches their own playing style.

Tick-Tock Boom Escape Room Game : Escape the Room – Limited Time

Since I’m an avid fan of puzzle game, I’m very happy to review one. Actually, most of the ‘escape room’ games I’ve ever played usually have similar concept and features, but this game, Escape the Room : Limited Time by Gameday Inc., is a great game among all. This game’s concept is actually pretty similar like any other escape room games, but the storyline and additional feature is pretty interesting.

As describe above in the picture, the story is thrilling and I’ll tell you why later. Escape the Room : Limited Time takes place in an unknown area while taking role of Hyunbin who was being kidnapped into this strange place. His body is injected with time bomb that will explode. Anyway, your main task is simply escaping that whatever-that-is place. By doing so and progressing throughout the game, you will find out a fact behind all of these things you’re facing.

The how-to-play is actually pretty simple, the logic isn’t, hahaha. You only need to find clue by tapping items that you think is usable or responsive to some actions. By doing so, the easiest way is by tapping literally everything in your screen, instead of specifically guessing what items are interactable (I hope this is a word, though, since the web is giving me a spell checker red underline). By doing so, you can find some useful items to move on to the next rooms. The thrilling part in Escape the Room : Limited Time is since a time bomb is installed inside Hyunbin’s body and cannot be taken off, your time in solving puzzle is time-limited. The bomb will explode if you can’t solve the puzzle in a set amount of time, so if he’s dead, it’s your fault, take it. :D.

Escape the Room : Limited Time is, in my opinion, the best puzzle game I’ve ever played. The storyline is interesting with each characters relationships, ultimate story behind all of this, and the mystery concealed in the puzzle and story. The puzzles are very challenging especially some of the last parts. You need to use quite massive amount of logic since the puzzles aren’t that easy to solve. The user interface is quite different than some other escape room games especially with tools provided for you to specifically move/examine/touch/see your inventory. It’s so well-made and detailed.

Guess I need to explore more games from this developer in case they made several similar games.
