New Concept, New Experience : WarFriends

Before I state anything, I’m gonna say that this is one of my favorite mobile games ever.

OK, now get to the game. My friend and I were looking for some coop games that could be played together. I stumbled across this game, called WarFriends. This cool game was developed by Chillingo. Looks like this developer has some similar great games and mostly rated with around 4 stars on Google Play.

The main concept of WarFriends is 1 v 1 PVP battle and you can have different opponent per each match. PVP battle could be a common concept but the interesting concept lays on its gameplay. Basically, you are controlling a soldier to battle your opponent in a death-match skirmish. You and your opponent will be provided with 5 tactical shields as covers (for you to hide from enemies’ bullets). You will hide behind this covers and you can change covers for your own advantages.

Let’s see how WarFriends is really constructed with unique concept..

The graphic style is 3D already, but not that serious realistic 3D style, but looks more to cute side instead, with chibi-like characters. As you can see there, the battleground is a face-to-face area with special covers for each players and several sand-sacks and pile-of-bricks covers for any deployed armies. Yes, both players can deploy additional armies (which could be customized, upgraded, and set for each players’s battle style). These armies consist of machine gunner, grenadier, and many ore. Every tactical shield covers can be destroyed especially with heavy weapons like grenades and so on, but it will be automatically repaired in a short time.

WarFriends provides a unique gameplay that you might not find it before. You can’t rush directly to your opponent’s position, but you can change cover to the shields next to you. You might want to deploy some additional armies to help you gain victory by tapping the armies’ icons on the bottom left corner. They will attack automatically to both your opponent or his armies that have been deployed. Now, how do you attack your enemies? Simply tap and hold your screen to attack. Your default weapon is assault rifle and by holding the screen, you’ll release a barrage of bullets. Throwing grenades by swiping the screen to the target’s position. You can use sniper rifle as well. By holding rifle while the sniper is active, you can zoom in to the point where you hold the screen to gain better view of your opponents. Damage is massive if you can score a headshot.

Now, this is my first time playing such game with cool gaming experience, especially how they (developers) create the battleground. By giving players capability to control their crosshair to the selected opponent, it give totally different experience (at least for me) and Chillingo as the developer gains my 2-thumbs-up. The more interesting thing is, you can do PvP with your friends by inviting via Google Play or Facebook account (if I recall correctly). It’s good to play such an amazing game and if you have some suggestions, ideas, or opinions, don’t hesitate to pour some words at the comment section. Give like if you enjoy reading my stories, and see you on the next experiences.

First Timer with Local Bandung Food! : Seblak

That day my friends and I walked around a shopping mall in Yogyakarta. I didn’t recognize that it had some kind of mini hawker center inside that sold like street food and beverages. Then I saw this unique name, Seblak. I wondered what kind of food that was. After a quite long time of thinking and waiting for people to clear the queue line, I ordered one portion of this ‘new’ dish.

After a quick research, I learned that Seblak is actually a traditional dish (or you can count this as snack and not heavy meal) from Bandung, West Java. I’ve never had foodie trips around West Java before so this snack right here was like a teaser for me. I’d be glad to be able to get some foodie experience there, but this time, this one was quite an eye-opener. You can get this in Lippo Plaza, Yogyakarta.

seblak

Seblak

The visual appearance might be unappetizing but the taste was the other way around. Its main ingredient was kerupuk which was crackers for side dish, very common and vary in Indonesia. Kerupuk udang was used in this dish. I didn’t see the cooking process but I probably could take it like this : the kerupuk udang used for this dish were still raw, meaning they’re still inedible. They were then mixed with all the broth, spices (I tasted quite strong ginger flavor in it) and other ingredients (mine came with egg and slices of meatballs).

The kerupuk became soggy and soaked with broth, thus resulting in chewy and soft texture. To top this up, the amount of kerupuk used were outstandingly massive. The broth was has savory flavor with subtle taste of saltiness. There were more complete version of Seblak that contains more protein if you’re going to order there. Upon the final product, most of the kerupuk were still attached to each other, making it easier to eat. 😀

Anyway, I kinda like this ‘appetizer’ even it’s Bandung’s traditional dish but STILL was made in Yogyakarta. My best guess is it’s still cooked with some Yogyakarta flavor in it and not an authentic eastern Java flavor. Even so, the differences may not be that much, I assume. 🙂 So, I’m gonna end my story here (such a short one isn’t it? :D), stay tuned for the next foodie trips, give like if you enjoy reading my experiences, and leave some comments if you have any ideas or opinions.

Using Your Brain to the Max Level : That Level Again (1-3)

Playing games sometimes are not about great graphics and immersive gameplay. Another aspect you might consider to think about is how you can use your brain to solve the game. This game that I want to talk about this time is called That Level Again (3 installments at once since all of them are basically the same). The game was developed by IamTagir. Actually it could be considered a quick-to-finish game if you properly understand how to solve the puzzles (yes this is a puzzle platformer game).

Let’s start by looking at the graphic style first

That Level Again 1

The first one is the cover screen that has the style of scribble-like graphics. Gotta love the simple and minimalist style. Then the next one is the gameplay. Seriously, the gameplay mostly looks like that with only differences in puzzles and how to solve them. In the 3rd installment, the graphics is a little different. The first installment have one kind of map, and so is the 2nd one, but no the third. The third is like story-based puzzle map, so it would chance continuously.

That Level Again 2
(still with that scribble-ish style but different level map, with that additional room through that wooden door)

That Level Again 3

*P.S. : this is the 3rd installment, still with that cute style, though.

Here That Level Agian 3, you’ll be presented with the main story and ending. Everything you did starting from the first up to the third game will be answered here. These series are all free to download and play. At the third game you’ll have 2 different endings, the happy and sad one, you may choose. The happy is the default one you can get and to access the sad ending you have to donate to the developers. The number isn’t that massive but I think it’s worth the ending. It’s all about plot twist and unexpected story. When I watched the sad ending, I was like ‘What the actual hell?’ in my mind.

The game’s how to play is actually pretty simple and sometimes a little bit tricky. You have 2 button at the bottom left corner to move forward or backward and at the other end is a button to jump. The tricky part is sometimes the button will be reversed, switched, not functioning, even moved around the screen (this one was pretty annoying, though, hahahaha). The ways you solve the puzzle will be as tricky as it can be. Sometimes you have some simple puzzles, simply take the key and open the door. Another points, you even have to slide some objects that don’t seem to be movable or even going all the way to home screen to do some stuffs there to get access for the key. Bruh, at some points the puzzle are getting irritating by letting the players to think out of the boundaries but that’s the point of interest. You may need to use motion detection at some points in the game. So, yeah, prepare for anything 😀

Despite on how irritating it can be, I still love the series. That Level Again brings originality in a puzzle game, specially the problem solving. They also have high rates in Google Play and I think the developers deserve it. Many developers try to copy their style, but IMO, I still prefer to play That Level Again.

Anyway, I think that’s for now, give like if you enjoy reading my stories, pour some words in the comment section if you have ideas or opinions, and see you on the next stories (it might be about foodie again next, so stay tuned to see what I have up on my sleeves :D).

Very Detailed Reading-Only Game : Zombie Exodus

Lately I found a game (actually its successor) but it’s still at the 1st part and the developer is still working on it. This game is called Zombie Exodus : Save Haven. Upon playing the first part, my friend told me there’s another similar game, the previous installment called Zombie Exodus. This one has been fully developed and was a very interesting game. Hosted Games as the developer really nails their job at making such simple games with exciting experience for players.

If you play this game, you can count, maybe the amount of pictures in this game (excluding this game cover)

k0sdf3n

could be less than ten, really. Even those in-game pictures during stories are just basically sketches, rough sketches, just to make a simple image in players’ mind about what happened on Zombie Exodus universe. That cover artwork is pretty awesomely drawn, though. 😀

The gameplay is simple, you read and choose. Really, that simple. Like any other choose your own story games. Like this, as an example of one in-game screen..edpabgw

See, a minimalist tone isn’t it? Basically it’s just 95% texts. Zombie Exodus‘s selling point is its storyline. The story is very complex for ‘just’ a game. The creator (or storyline artists probably) really did their job amazingly at describing every situations in the game. They gave us extraordinarily detailed ‘images’ of the story. You will start at the same point but will have 9 different endings depends on how you progress throughout the story.

My own favorite thing here in Zombie Exodus is its character development, even with deeper feature in the next installment, Zombie Exodus : Safe Haven. In that last picture, it’s a screenshot of a scene where you can decide your own profession/job. In this game you can choose 1 among 5 and each might results in different endings. Then there’s the character status including strength, dexterity, intelligence, and charisma. Each could be developed through some ways inside the game and each would really matter in the story. For example, you could die in a battle with zombie only you’re lacking strength, meanwhile higher strength could easily kill zombie and carry more items. That kind of possibilities.

I won’t spoil too much story of this game, but inside you’ll encounter a lot of crossroads like rejecting/accepting new crew, recruiting people, killing someone/something, and so on. Each relationship with people are displayed and can affect your story. You can be hated or loved by people. You can even have boyfriend/girlfriend. Hah! That’s it! A little bit of romance inserted during zombie apocalypse :D.

Anyway, even 9 different ending possibilities are featured, I only tried 2. Too tired to get everything. First playthrough got a ‘so-so’ ending (IMO), and the second run got a quite interesting and a little bit sad ending (IMO as well). Overall, I love this game, specially the part that you can choose your own in-game fate hahaha. Looks like the developer also made some different themed games and I think I might try those. Last but not least, if you enjoy reading my entire story, give like below, and give some comments if you have any ideas/opinions. See you on the next stories!

Heartwarming Oden Shop Game : Oden Cart A Heartwarming Tale

Casual games are really good for any people with a little spare time or even hardcore gamers. Not long after I discovered Showa Candy Shop, another game with similar style popped up in my Google Play search results. The mechanism was just too similar and obviously it’s developed by the same creator, Gagex Co., Ltd.. It’s called Oden Cart A Heartwarming Tale. Seems like this developer really love making this kind of soothing and heartwarming game. Upon I checked the developer itself, it’s indeed a lot of similar games were displayed, but most of them were in Japanese. Too bad I don’t understand Japanese that much. 😦

Anyway, the gameplay is more or less the same, but the story isn’t. Let’s take a look at the graphic style first..

kjmvgzl

This is just the cover home screen and there’s stated ‘The strangely moving tale..’. Well, it’s true whatsoever, hahahah. Even it’s just a simple and casual game, the storyline is pretty interesting to follow.

In Oden Cart A Heartwarming Tale, you’ll be taking role of an oden seller that will manage your oden cart to bring more customers to come. Whenever customers come, they will start to do some talk to you and you will listen to them. Each topics are represented by speech bubble.3b2oqfx

Your sale would depend on how often you listen to the customers. The speech bubbles would be indicated in some different colors, depending on how deep the topic/conversation is. Sometimes the oden seller (you) will give responses to the customers. Don’t worry, the game will do it for you. Your only job is to read them as it’s just a storyline-based game mechanism. All you need to do is just to tap that bubbles to ‘listen’.

You’ll get about 12 types of customer, which have their own oden preferences. Being that way, the first rule is don’t forget to refill your oden cart if you’re going idle. Oden Cart A Heartwarming Tale is an idle game, so you don’t need to open the app for God-knows how long. Second rule is, if you want a specific customer to come, make sure to check his/her favorite type of oden. That strategy will directly result in that customer to come. The customers have 4 states ranking from very conscious to very drunk. The more you listen to their stories, the faster the customers to get drunk and order a lot of odens. Each customers have their own ending stories as well, but some of them are connected to another customers. I won’t spoil the story here, but it’s totally worth it to play this game and follow along with the storyline. Besides, it’s free to downloa as well.

Playing this kind of game brings such good mood. Great storyline, easy to play, cute graphics, and heartwarming musics. Casual gamers who loves story-based games would really love Oden Cart A Heartwarming Tale. I hope Gagex Co. as the developer would create English-translated similar games :D. Anyway, thank you for being with me until this very line, give like if you enjoy reading my stories, pour some comments if you have ideas or opinions or recommendations, and see you next time!

Unique Fighting Game : Rival School

For this time, I won’t talk about indie games, but a game from my childhood instead. It’s made by Capcom and it was so freakin’ cool in its era. It was realease in ’97 as an arcade game, and ’98 for PS console. It’s a fighting game called Rival School.

In about ’99 or 2000, I got PS console and Rival School is one game that I play often. It takes theme of Japanese high school and has really thick Japanese culture on it. Like anything that you’ll see in school life anime. The main story is about several high school students who tries to solve problems of kidnapping and attacking that are taking victims of their friends. This lead to the unity of several high schools in Aoharu City (where the game takes place) to unite, hence the first installment of the series is ‘United by Fate’.6q9x7vc

The first series’ logo.

*P.S. : There’s the 2nd installement of the franchise which is called ‘Shiritsu Justice Gakuen: Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 and as some of you may have thought just by looking at the title, the game was only released in Japan and didn’t have English translation copies. I played it but don’t understand a thing. It’s considered as an expansion pack and all I know is they have several new characters and mini games.

In Rival School you’ll be introduced to several characters with each’ unique appearance, combos, special skills, talents, and unique move sets. Each characters take different roles from what a high school community could have. There are 5 different high schools in the area..

  • Taiyou High School : more like a private school. Representing this high school you’ll have a transfer student (the main character), his riend and also 1st year student, another 1st year student belongs to the school discipline comitee, a photographer and journalist (only available in the expansion pack), and a PE teacher carrying a kendo stick.
  • Gorin High School : this one is a all-about-sports school. Gorin produced extraordinarily talented athletes aiming for national competition. From this school you’ll have a vollyball player, a baseball player, a mixed-race goalkeeper, and a swimmer (this one only available in the expansion pack).
  • Pacific High School : a high school full of transfer students from the United States. A transfer students is sent here to investigate the school incident. From Pacific High School you’ll have a female cheerleader, a ‘battle priest’ (not really a priest, but has belief like true priest but was built like an unbeatable fighter), and a younger version-ish of Terry Bogard from SNK (seriously..)
  • Gedo High School : this one is where my favorite character comes from. It’s the school of the delinquents, but once a high-standard school. From this high school you’ll get a gang leader (a.k.a big boss), his younger sister, a heavy-set students with sumo style battle technique, and a slick-as-snake yankee (my fave one)
  • Justice High School : the elite school with the hardest studying regime you can ever imagine. Everything is set by strict rule and studying time is planned to create the highest quality of the students. From this academy, you’ll get the principal himself, his nephew, a school nurse, and a Japanese literature teacher (who also possess 9th dan in karate).

Which all characters are presented, you as the player can choose your own style and favorite since each characters bring their own style and plus & minus. For the battle scene, take a look at this picture.rival-schools-united-by-fate_2

Battle of Shoma (the baseball player) and Natsu (the volleyball player)
Both belong to Gorin High School

See, the graphic might not be the best of all fighting games at that time, but Rival School was one of a few games offering 3D free-movement battle style (along with Tekken series and Bloody Roar series). The graphics wasn’t that bad, IMO. If you zoom in, you might see the rough detail since the models are based with polygonal 3D blocks, but, meh.., the game’s still awesome nonetheless.

Each characters can release vigor attacks that consume one bar of skill (bottom left and right of the screen for P1 and P2 respectively). By pressing L1 or L2 by default setting, you could strike vigor attacks and each characters have 2 different skills. Every battle is basically 2 v 2 but the characters could not be used together. It’s a tag mode battle, so the tag is after each round is finished. Being you have 2 characters in your side, Rival School give tag skill feature. Equipping different characters will be resulting in different skill attacks. There are 3 types of tag skill effects : give damage, give health, and give skill meter. Executing vigor attack consume 1 skill meter, while tag skill consume 2.

Rival School filled some parts of my childhood being a fighting game that I play most along with Tekken 3 and Bloody Roar 2. Its theme that had Japanese daily life and not so warrior-like style (instead, they’re just bunch of kids and their teachers) are that intrigued me most. Just different nuance to distinguish this game with the other fighting games. Next time I’ll be back to review indie games, this one’s just an intermezzo. Leave a like if you enjoy reading this post, pour some comments if you have ideas, opinions, or recommendations, and see you on the next stories.

Time is Your Only Limit : Traffic Rider

Couple months ago I found this interesting game from Google Play. It’s basically a racing game but it’s not really. Err.. how should I say it. Time attack! Yes, time attack game. A racing game where you don’t have any other enemies but you mostly try to beat the time to succeed. The game is called Traffic Rider and is developed by Soner Kara.

This game is intriguing, IMO. Basically you take a role of a street bike rider behind the wheel and try to reach a finish point per track. Each level will have different requirement (to enter), prerequisite, and obstacles. Let’s take a look on the graphics before I talk a lot further because this game is sooooo satisfying..

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

See, that graphic is so satisfying. You’ll play in first person with a vast-looking environment with pretty realistic style. The control is by tilting your phone left or right to turn your motorbike to evade any vehicles. The thing is, you can’t play it while laying down. I don’t know why but the motion control doesn’t work that way. If it’s from the game, it’s so unfortunate, but it’s just minor, no problem. (This issue has been tested with 3 different phones and was resulting in the same comebacks.). You can customize your pair of gloves with different colors by buying them in the home screen. Getting money in Traffic Rider is by playing each level. Even you no longer have mission there or didn’t reach the finish point, you can still earn some bucks.

Amount of money you gain per level is depending on your effort. To gain some extra money you need to pass over vehicles but with slight-to-collide distance, in short, almost hitting the cars. That will get you extra bucks and extra money for your journey. At some level, you will race through a double-lane street, which give you extra money as well if you place yourself on the opposite lane. The longer you do, more money you’ll get. After advancing your player to level 11 (if I recall correctly), you’ll gain ability to do wheelie. Doing this as long as possible can give you extra money and time as well.

As for the motorbike..

wggsowq

BAM! There! You have a lot of choices to pick but you need to work your way through. There’re lot of bikes to choose, scooter, dirt bike, sport bike, naked bike, superbike, you name it. Even there’s an unknown bike like steam-powered or something, IDK. For a starter, you’ll be given a scooter. The design of the bike in the gameplay will also change as you progress through the game and get new bikes. This makes a plus point for the game itself, cool design. You’ll race through some places like suburban, rural city, in the middle of busy street, mountain side, seaside road, and some more. You can also enjoy the ride (without any missions or time) in ‘free ride’. Here you can choose the place, time (day, night, dusk, etc.), and the crowd density, which means a possibility of no-obstacle street that let you only to enjoy the ride and view.

Overall, I love this game. You can play as many times as you like since there’s no in-game energy required to play. The graphic is what excite me most since it’s like riding a real bike on the street with real-life-like view. Even if you hit the road fence or vehicles, your POV will take you to a spin-a-whirl like you have incident for real :D. That’s dope! Anyway, if you enjoy reading my posts, give some like, and if you have ideas, opinions, or game recommendations, make sure to leave words in the comment section.
